Neurological Conditions

Neurological degenerative diseases can affect a multitude of areas requiring intervention to slow progression and maintain function.

NMES Swallowing Treatment

Northern Tides provides Neuromuscular Electric Stimulation treatment to strengthen muscles used during swallowing. This well researched  intervention has shown to restore safe swallow function more rapidly than traditional methods and significantly reduce risk of aspiration.

Neuromuscular electric stimulation (NMES) therapy is a well researched treatment to improve the strength of the muscles involved in swallowing. NMES is used in conjunction with traditional swallowing exercises to maximize muscle contraction resulting in faster and more effective results. This treatment has shown to reduce aspiration, as well as improve strength and range of motion of the facial muscles.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists work with individuals of all ages to encourage participation in activities of daily living. Activities of daily living (ADLs) include anything the patient wants / needs to do in order to participate in meaningful activities that are important for quality of life. This includes engagement in activities in the community, in your home, at your work, and at your school. We partner with patients and their family to develop personalized goals to address what matters most.

Occupational therapy interventions address specific skills, including:

Fine motor

Gross motor

Sensory processing

Visual motor

Self-care (dressing, feeding, toileting, oral hygiene, functional mobility)

Pediatric Speech Therapy

We offer skilled pediatric therapy to provide therapeutic interventions aimed at maximizing your child's growth and progress. Our clinicians are experienced in treating neurological and developmental speech and language disorders, including feeding/swallowing and voice dysfunction.

Our clinicians conduct both formal and informal assessment measures to identify your child's strengths and areas of improvement. Following the evaluation we develop a treatment plan specific to the unique goals of our patients and their family. We are trained to treat a wide variety of speech, language, voice, and feeding deficits with specializations in treating neurologically based disorders.

We incorporate the latest evidence based treatment protocols that promote the formation of new neural pathways in the brain maximizing your child's progress. These include neuromuscular electric stimulation (NMES) swallowing treatment and the researched based LSVT LOUD voice program.

Skip + Tommie

"Steve has been the best voice therapist we have ever had. His LSVT LOUD training made my husband, who has Parkinson's, much louder. He also kept in contact with our ENT, so he knew what Skip was having done with his throat. A thorough, nice, caring man!"
